Performance reviews made easy
Streamline your performance reviews so you can see business results.
Seems like we still have a love-hate relationship when it comes to peformance reviews, with most of us finding little to love about them. Even top-performing employees dread them, according to research by psychologists from several universities. Why? No one seems to appreciate critical feedback — one of the key tools for improving performance.
The study, which included surveys of 234 employees at a large university, served as a reminder of how important it is to conduct your reviews. Depending upon how you give negative feedback, the researchers said, you could end up discouraging your team instead of motivating them.
Satoris Culbertson, a Kansas State University management professor, suggested evaluating any ranking or rating system and the impact it could have. “It’s all relative,” she said in a Washington Post article. While a 4 out of 5 could be fantastic news to one employee, it could be incredibly discouraging to another, she noted. “You have to think about what the person is seeing. We can’t just put a number on it.”
Here are some other tips worth considering:
While you may never get anyone to give a 5-star rating to the whole business of performance reviews, you may be able to get the process to go much more smoothly — and, as a result, boost performance through development initiatives.
